I'm trying to use the current dosemu 1.0.2 with
freedos to run BBS doorgames. This used to require
the vmodem patch on 1.0.1.
In dosemu 1.0.1 with the vmodem patch, I used to need
to enter the line in dosemu.conf
$_com1="virtual"
But when I try that with 1.0.2, it gives me a
segmentation fault.
Are there any linux BBS sysops out there using dosemu
to run dos doorgames out there, who can help me out
with this problem?
-Regards,
Darryl Perry

Did you hand-compile dosemu? Does it run without that line?

Yes. (Raises hand) :)
I think Bob Newell lurks on this list too.

Okay, because 1.0.x and early 1.1.x versions don't work when compiled with
recent bison versions.

Interesting. What about 1.1.4?

Newer Linux kernels are ISO-8859-1 codepage by defeault. You must explicitly
set the codepage with: charset G0 cp437
in a virtual console that you want to use IBM characters in. If you want
to use cp437 (IBM) character set in a X terminal, you must install the VGA
font (vga.pcf) and tell the terminal to use it when you run it (typically
with -fn vga or -font vga).

Welp, let us know when you get around to giving it another shot.

Hello.

Upgrade your kernel to 2.4.20 or 2.5.55.

Well, any of the dosemu versions should work the same. You don't need a
patch for newer versions, just add -I"serial { com 1 virtual }" to the dosemu
command line. Of course that is assuming your dosemu isn't segfaulting when
you do that. :)
I wrote a patch to integrate DOSEMU support into Synchronet BBS software
which may be found at:
http://forge.icequake.net/syncmods
There is also a "glue" script there that might assist you in setting up DOSEMU
with the proper options to run BBS games.
