In my experience, sending follow-up emails to Linus on issues to do with
pull requests doesn't work - the pull happens long before Linus reads the
follow-up email. It's entirely possible that Linus has already pulled
my tree, but hasn't published it yet - I've seen that happen several
times when I submit pull requests over a weekend.

If there's a problem, Linus will reply, possibly with a "check my
conflict resolution" or "I've not pulled, please fix it up your tree".

* linux-next: Tree for September 14
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2009-09-14 8:55 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: LKML

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 9907 bytes --]

Hi all,

Please do not add code destined for 2.6.33 into linux-next trees until
(at least) 2.6.32-rc1 is out. This will hopefully give those who have
stuff destined for just after -rc1 a chance.

Changes since 20090911:

We are seeing conflicts move from one tree to another as Linus merges
them.

The sparc tree lost its conflict.

The nfsd tree lost its conflict.

The rr tree still has a build failure so I used the version from
next-20090908.

The block tree gained a different build failure so I used the version from
next-20090910.

The security testing lost its conflicts to others.

The tip tree lost a conflict to another tree.

The oprofile tree lost its conflict.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 140 trees (counting Linus' and 21 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

You could, of course, send an email to Linus saying something like
"linux-next has shown that you will get a conflict in
arch/arm/kernel/signal.c when you merge the arm tree. You could fix it
like this: ... or I could merge your tree and fix it locally and let you
know when it is done."

Actually Linus is probably clever enough to fix the conflict himself -
after all, I did :-)

No idea. I guess the Atmel folk have split one logical change up between
two trees, and its only been half merged. I don't see anything in the
patch description which mentions this though.

That's going to be a problem then - I've sent Linus a pull request last
Saturday, and so my tree is now frozen pending a response from Linus.

You might like to send him an email pointing out this merge fix, as when
he merges your tree, it will fail to build tun ... and, if he is told, he
can put this fix in the merge commit so there is no bisection breakage.
This is all presuming that commit

Ok, since I already sent a merge request to Linus I'll submit this
as soon as he does that pull.

I don't like "slipping" in things to a tree I've already asked
him to pull from, and in this case especially since I'd have
to merge his tree in to keep net-next-2.6 itself building.

* linux-next: block tree build failure

Hi Jens,

Today's linux-next build (x86_64 allmodconfig) failed like this:

drivers/block/aoe/aoeblk.c: In function 'aoeblk_make_request':
drivers/block/aoe/aoeblk.c:175: error: implicit declaration of function 'bio_barrier'

Caused by commit c1db2f19f1302e894fe9db818e08fb03e4a84df9 ("aoe: end
barrier bios with EOPNOTSUPP") interacting with commit
1f98a13f623e0ef666690a18c1250335fc6d7ef1 ("bio: first step in sanitizing
the bio->bi_rw flag testing").

I have used the version of the block tree from next-20090910 for today.

This is now a conflict between the arm tree and Linus' tree (as the
security-testing tree has been merged).

Yep. same here.

It's even more fishy:
  - double_rq_lock() is useded inside #ifdef CONFIG_PREEMPT
  - double_rq_lock() is defined inside #ifdef CONFIG_SMP
  - double_rq_lock() is used inside #ifdef CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU

Randy Dunlap noted:

  when CONFIG_MODULES=n:

drivers/scsi/qla2xxx/qla_os.c:2685: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type

  in

	kobject_uevent_env(&(&vha->hw->pdev->driver->driver)->owner->mkobj.kobj,

Trigger kobject event on the 'struct device' hanging off the pci_dev.

The data is going the wrong way to use the current firmware interface,
which is designed to load data from userspace into the kernel. For this
interface, we want the data to go the other way (i.e. the kernel has a
blob of dump data it would like userspace to save if it can).

I'd be amenable to updating the firmware interface to do this, but it
looks like adding a completely new codepath, which it's not clear even
belongs there.

Well linux-next builds still gave both warnings yesterday, so I was just
asking to make sure they were not forgotten.

I wonder if this was created by the crypto merge.

Hi,

I've been getting build failures in the next tree since next-20090903,
also experienced up to next-20090910, which I've not been able to
investigate, due to a lack of time and git-fu. rt2x00dev.c causes the
following:

LD drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/built-in.o
 CC [M] drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00dev.o
drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00dev.c: In function ‘rt2x00lib_rxdone’:
drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00dev.c:405: warning: passing argument
3 of ‘rt2x00crypto_rx_insert_iv’ makes integer from pointer without a
cast
drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00lib.h:383: note: expected ‘unsigned
int’ but argument is of type ‘struct rxdone_entry_desc *’
drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00dev.c:405: error: too few arguments
to function ‘rt2x00crypto_rx_insert_iv’
make[4]: *** [drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00dev.o] Error 1
make[3]: *** [drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00] Error 2
make[2]: *** [drivers/net/wireless] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/net] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

I've attached my .config if relevant.

Take care.
Ken.
