Hello all,

I get an error when trying to start up kissattach on my Suse 10 box.
I'm running the Suse 2.6.13-15.8 kernel, no changes made to it.

When I run
"kissattach /dev/ttyS0 vhf 10.0.0.1"
I get back
"kissattach: Error setting line discipline: TIOCSETD: No such device
Are you sure you have enabled MKISS support in the kernel
or, if you made it a module, that the module is loaded?"

I get no other error other than suse complaning that I didn't configure and
AX0 port.
Any ideas, Do I need to patch?

I do have the AX.25 stuff downloaded from suse linux ham YAST source.

Any input would be of help.

Thanks

Jeremiah

It is broken and I don't know of a reliable patch other than getting the
latest kernel from kernel.org. You have 3 choices.

1. Back off to SuSE 9.3.
2. Try SuSE 10.1 RC1 (See www.opensuse.org)
3. Update the kernel to 2.6.16 from kernel.org sources.

There is one other possible cure I forgot to mention...
Point a YaST install source to
ftp://ftp.esat.net/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD/
and try the "kotd - kernel of the day"

Will this be an "easy" kernel upgrade or will it break a system if one
just installs the rpm and that is it? Or will YaST "magically" make
the initrd file and put the new kernel where it should be and make an
entry in Grub?

I am still very green to kernel upgrading (normally I will wait for
the next distro' version) and so don't have all the steps burned into
my cortex like most of the folks on this list, so please pardon the
ignorance...

Yep, I made sure that Mkiss and ax25 are getting loaded, and they are. I
should have knowen better then to leave that out of my posting, lol

I didn't know about that one, cool. Now is that bleeding edge kernels, or do
they have stable builds on there too??

Do you know what kernel ax25 is working on??

My mistake. There are no YaST control files present in that directory. You
need to download the RPM's and install manually. If you are using Grub,
everything should get taken care of. However, there will be no automatic
updating via YOU. Other things like wireless and third party video might
have problems with this approach also.

The problem is a broken mkiss kernel module. I tried to update this from
source a while back and got nowhere. There are too many other dependencies.
A lot of work was done on the AX.25 kernel modules recently and will be
present when SuSE 10.1 gets released (with 2.6.16 kernel). Currently RC1 is
available and the official release of 10.1 is scheduled for April 25. That
would be the best solution and one I am waiting for.

My cluster server is still running 9.3 because of the mkiss issue. I will
be putting 10.1 RC1 on a test machine this weekend to try things out. Beta
9 looked good as far as AX.25 was concerned. About a month after the 10.1
release, I might upgrade my main server.

well, I guess I could always give 2.6.16 a try on a vmware type install and
see what happens. Or maybe this is a good reason for me to try to get Xen
work. ^_^

Kernel versions that I know about:

2.6.14 is broken.
2.6.15.2 Was patched.
2.6.16.x is good (from RC1).

Note these are the official release numbers from kernel.org. They are not
the same sub version numbers that SuSE uses. Assuming SuSE picked up the
standard 2.6.16 sources, the 10.1 release should be just fine.

After downloading the ISO images of 10.1rc1 and searching disc one, it
uses 2.6.16.20 as the "default" kernel, so would that have a fair
chance of working with ax25 and mkiss ?

tnx for any input/help

There is another gotcha...

SuSE 10.1 RC1 does not include libax25 any longer. However, the kernel is
still built with the mkiss and ax25 modules so no kernel recompile is
needed. This causes the current 10.0 packages to fail dependencies when you
try and install them through YaST.

There is hope. I am attempting to build a libax25 rpm file. I am also
looking at creating an "add-on" for all of the packages using the new 10.1
features of YaST.

More later.

Hello all:

Well I'm a happy guy today, I got 2.6.16 installed from the RPM on my Suse
10.0 box, and so far it seems to run happy. I had to do the install a few
times, but after doing a "rpm -iv --nodeps ..." to keep it from complaning
that it didn't have the right version of perl-bootloader it seems to work.

So I can have my packet base station back, YEAH!!!!

I'll keep every one up to date on this if I find any problems with running
this non-distro stander kernel.

Thanks all for that help ^_^
