Summary: ISA cards (opl3sa2 in particular) are not detected

Description:
When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings
are incorrectly detected by alsaconf from alsa-utils. For example, the
default BIOS settings are IRQ=11, DMA1=0, DMA2=1, but alsaconf detects
IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0. No matter the BIOS settings, alsaconf always
detects those settings (IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0). If I set the BIOS settings
to that, then the card will make sound (after touching the mixer while
playing audio).
According to perex (author of the opl3sa2 driver):
"The alsaconf tries to gather free resources (irq/dma/ports) from the
/proc filesystem. It might be extended to gather this information also
from /sys filesystem."

Another thing I've noticed and figured I'd add is the following message
from dmesg:
PnPBIOS: Disabled by ACPI PNP
I've tried alsaconf and modprobe for installing the module with ACPI off
and this PnPBIOS on and ACPI on and PnPBIOS off and I don't think there's
a difference.
However, if this will make a difference, well, now you know.

Okay, I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled ALSA 1.0.9 with the above
patches. After installing alsa-driver, it seemed to configure the sound
card, as well, and I was able to open the mixer and, by touching the PCM
mixer, play audio.
I thought this was weird since I didn't have to run alsaconf or modprobe.
When I ran the alsaconf that came with 1.0.9 (not the above version) and
had it brute force detect the card (no PnP cards were detected), I get
lots and lots of "Unknown symbol" errors in snd_opl3sa2, snd_opl3_lib, and
snd_cs4231_lib. I also get an occasional non-fatal Oops as this runs. I'm
going to have to kill the script and see if I can try your attached one.

Woah!
I think I may have found my problem. I mounted /sys and my card looks like
it was found!
So, so, so sorry.
Updates added here.
Update: I added a line for /sys to my /etc/fstab and rebooted. When I ran
alsaconf, it detected the card as PnP and offered to set it up or do a
brute force check. I opted to set the card up, it set the mixer settings.
No errors. I ran alsamixer. It works alright.
As an unrelated note, I had to install oss-lib to get mplayer to work
since that was faster than recompiling mplayer with the new alsa lib.
Wow. The detection works. Sweet. Check.
I still have to touch the PCM mixer to get any actual sound. If this bug
gets closed, I'll open that one next.
Thanks so so much, perex. I was beginning to doubt you.
Heh. Update: A small problem I'm noticing is that alsaconf runs smoothly
the first time, detecting the card well, but if I run it again (just for
fun) tons of segfaults/panics are produced. If I can figure out how to
find just the first one, I'll try to post it. Otherwise, just a heads-up.

know if this is correct, but it seems to allow the build to continue.
I'll edit this note with any later updates.
Update: The compile finished and I was able to run alsaconf. The card
wasn't detected as PnP, so I let alsa bruteforce detect it. It said it was
going to configure the modprobe.conf file, but when it was setting the
mixer settings, it showed an error that then went away when the final
screen was displayed. Trying to run alsamixer produces and error:
# alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

Playing a file in mplayer looks like it's playing normally, but I'm not at
the machine so I can't say if it is actually working or not. I'm guessing
it's not working.
Update2: From /etc/modprobe.conf:

isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5
dma1 and dma2 are still being incorrectly detected.

Summary: ISA cards (opl3sa2 in particular) are not detected
properly on 2.6 kernels
Description:
When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings
are incorrectly detected by alsaconf from alsa-utils. For example, the
default BIOS settings are IRQ=11, DMA1=0, DMA2=1, but alsaconf detects
IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0. No matter the BIOS settings, alsaconf always
detects those settings (IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0). If I set the BIOS settings
to that, then the card will make sound (after touching the mixer while
playing audio).
According to perex (author of the opl3sa2 driver):
"The alsaconf tries to gather free resources (irq/dma/ports) from the
/proc filesystem. It might be extended to gather this information also
from /sys filesystem."

Since Oopses can lead to corrupt kernel memory, only the first Oops since
booting the machine is relevant. You mentioned that the first Oops(es)
were non-fatal so just copy the first one from the logs.
Those Unknown symbol errors mean that you compiled ALSA against a
different kernel version than you are running. Make sure your installed
kernel source matches the running kernel version.

Okay, I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled ALSA 1.0.9 with the above
patches. After installing alsa-driver, it seemed to configure the sound
card, as well, and I was able to open the mixer and, by touching the PCM
mixer, play audio.
I thought this was weird since I didn't have to run alsaconf or modprobe.
When I ran the alsaconf that came with 1.0.9 (not the above version) and
had it brute force detect the card (no PnP cards were detected), I get
lots and lots of "Unknown symbol" errors in snd_opl3sa2, snd_opl3_lib, and
snd_cs4231_lib. I also get an occasional non-fatal Oops as this runs. I'm
going to have to kill the script and see if I can try your attached one.
Edit: I've killed the script and when I try to run alsamixer, I get an
Oops. I'm not sure how to capture it, though. Maybe netterm(?).

I tried adding that line and it did not immediately work. I tried using
alsaconf and modprobe snd_opl3sa2 and neither worked. I may have
unintentionally borked my machine though by removing /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/kernel/sound after I was getting errors trying to insert the new
module.
When I get home later today, I'll try rebooting and reinstalling ALSA
1.0.9 completely with all above patches and added lines. If that still
doesn't work, I could try downloading from CVS and let you know how that
goes, presuming all above patches are applied there.
I'm starting to think that it might work better/faster if I just make you
an account on my machine and let you poke and prod the hardware and try
stuff. Would that work [better]? I'm pretty sure that I'm doing everything
correctly in patching and testing, but in the case that I'm not, I don't
want you to have to keep writing patches and code and being bothered with
this when there is a PEBKAC on this end.

Another thing I've noticed and figured I'd add is the following message
from dmesg:
PnPBIOS: Disabled by ACPI PNP
I've tried alsaconf and modprobe for installing the module with ACPI off
and this PnPBIOS on and ACPI on and PnPBIOS off and I don't think there's
a difference.
However, if this will make a difference, well, now you know.

I see the problem. I've added this extra line to our CVS isa/opl3sa2.c
source which is missing in the opl3sa2.c.patch posted here:
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(pnp, snd_opl3sa2_pnpbiosids);
Add this line right after snd_opl3sa2_pnpbiosids[] table definition (after
ending }; ). Reinstall driver and now alsaconf should detect your card as
PnP.

Summary: ISA cards (opl3sa2 in particular) are not detected
properly on 2.6 kernels
Description:
When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings
are incorrectly detected by alsaconf from alsa-utils. For example, the
default BIOS settings are IRQ=11, DMA1=0, DMA2=1, but alsaconf detects
IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0. No matter the BIOS settings, alsaconf always
detects those settings (IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0). If I set the BIOS settings
to that, then the card will make sound (after touching the mixer while
playing audio).
According to perex (author of the opl3sa2 driver):
"The alsaconf tries to gather free resources (irq/dma/ports) from the
/proc filesystem. It might be extended to gather this information also
from /sys filesystem."

Sorry about the delay in my reply. I've been using my system recently and
haven't been able to reboot in the case that things crashed.
I'll test your latest patch again in a couple days when I'm done with
other things. However, I did try it and if I remember correctly, it didn't
work quite right with alsaconf or just modprobe. After running alsaconf, I
couldn't run a mixer.
Here's the output of that command:

I see the problem. I've added this extra line to our CVS isa/opl3sa2.c
source which is missing in the opl3sa2.c.patch posted here:
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(pnp, snd_opl3sa2_pnpbiosids);
Add this line right after snd_opl3sa2_pnpbiosids[] table definition (after
ending }; ). Reinstall driver and now alsaconf should detect your card as
PnP.

When I got back to my machine and tried playing some audio, no sound was
being made. I tried turning the mixers up, mute/unmute while playing, and
still nothing.
I just tried a cold start and after loading the patched snd_opl3sa2
module, I get the following in dmesg:

Summary: ISA cards (opl3sa2 in particular) are not detected
properly on 2.6 kernels
Description:
When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings
are incorrectly detected by alsaconf from alsa-utils. For example, the
default BIOS settings are IRQ=11, DMA1=0, DMA2=1, but alsaconf detects
IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0. No matter the BIOS settings, alsaconf always
detects those settings (IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0). If I set the BIOS settings
to that, then the card will make sound (after touching the mixer while
playing audio).
According to perex (author of the opl3sa2 driver):
"The alsaconf tries to gather free resources (irq/dma/ports) from the
/proc filesystem. It might be extended to gather this information also
from /sys filesystem."

Could you try the attached patch opl3sa2.c.patch? The driver should detect
your card in the PnP BIOS way... Simply remove all sound config from your
/etc/modules.conf and type 'modprobe snd-opl3sa2'..

I installed Windows XP on the machine a while back just for fun. (It's a
P2-300 with 192MB of RAM...not XP-friendly)
Windows detected the card "out of the box". I guess the driver could have
been provided to Microsoft by Yamaha or NeoMagic or whomever. My point is
that I installed no drivers, so the driver is the one that is normally
included with Windows XP.
I'll try tawai's suggestion for shits and giggles.

takashi: See the previous bug (related to). The BIOS disables ISA PnP
feature of the opl3sa2 card. It is not visible with the ISA PnP subsystem
or pnpdump from the isapnptools package. So, it behaves like a legacy ISA
card.
ahaning: You have a driver provided by vendor for Windows, right? Then it
might do some magic which we don't know. Or you may try, if the driver
resources in windows follows the BIOS settings. Perhaps, you'll have
similar problems with non-default values.
The datasheet for your chip says that the ISA PnP subsystem should detect
the card even if it is configured in manual mode.

Description:
When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings
are incorrectly detected by alsaconf from alsa-utils. For example, the
default BIOS settings are IRQ=11, DMA1=0, DMA2=1, but alsaconf detects
IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0. No matter the BIOS settings, alsaconf always
detects those settings (IRQ=5, DMA1=1, DMA2=0). If I set the BIOS settings
to that, then the card will make sound (after touching the mixer while
playing audio).
According to perex (author of the opl3sa2 driver):
"The alsaconf tries to gather free resources (irq/dma/ports) from the
/proc filesystem. It might be extended to gather this information also
from /sys filesystem."

takashi: See the previous bug (related to). The BIOS disables ISA PnP
feature of the opl3sa2 card. It is not visible with the ISA PnP subsystem
or pnpdump from the isapnptools package. So, it behaves like a legacy ISA
card.
ahaning: You have a driver provided by vendor for Windows, right? Then it
might do some magic which we don't know. Or you may try, if the driver
resources in windows follows the BIOS settings. Perhaps, you'll have
similar problems with non-default values.
The datasheet for your chip says that the ISA PnP subsystem should detect
the card even if it is configured in manual mode.

Well, this is very depressing, because when I installed Windows XP on this
machine, it had sound support out-of-the box. I did nothing. Sound just
worked.
Is it out of the question to redesign the ISAPNP code in ALSA or the
OPL3SA2 driver so that this actually works? I know very few people will
have this card anymore, but it will still be distressing for them when
they find that their *5+ YEAR OLD* sound card doesn't work without a lot
of work and won't ever work without lots of work on a NEWER version of
Linux, unlike Windows which detects the card and happily uses it.
Or maybe it would be better fixed by kernel people?

Neomagic MaigcWae 3D has a PnP card id NMX200. The device is YMH2210.
If the device is really an ISA PnP, you can run "modprobe snd-opl3sa2"
without any module parameters. Even you should *not* define any
parameters regarding resources.
OTOH, if the device is a non PnP, only brute-force configuration is
possible, i.e. checking /sys won't help. In this case, check alsaconf log
with -l option to see what it tried to detect correct parameters.

Okay, after some thoughs, we cannot do more. The BIOS disables for some
reason the ISAPnP configuration for your opl3sa2 card. You may also try
pnpdump on 2.4 kernel to be 100% that the card does not respond to ISA PnP
requests.
The legacy (non-PnP) configuration is always problematic and resources
must be specified manually according BIOS.
There is no way to read the "right" values from hardware...

It appears that the DMAs are the only parts that have to be forced
correctly. I tried setting DMA1 to 3 and DMA2 to 0 in the BIOS. They
weren't detected correctly, but when I fixed that part in
/etc/modprobe.conf, sound worked (after touching the mixer while
playing).
I can add some /proc or /sys output here later.

Okay, after some thoughs, we cannot do more. The BIOS disables for some
reason the ISAPnP configuration for your opl3sa2 card. You may also try
pnpdump on 2.4 kernel to be 100% that the card does not respond to ISA PnP
requests.
The legacy (non-PnP) configuration is always problematic and resources
must be specified manually according BIOS.
There is no way to read the "right" values from hardware...

When brute-force detecting my OPL3SA2 card, the IRQ and DMA1/DMA2 settings

I've uploaded a new alsaconf which should do it in the described way. Could
you give a try?
Note that it non-pnp probing/setup might fail anyway, but the resources
should be selected more correctly.

I tried the above alsaconf. The IRQ (irq=11) is now selected correctly.
However, I *think* dma1=5 and dma2=3 are incorrect. I'm starting to doubt
this now since I did mess with the BIOS settings recently. I'll check

Well, I'm going to guess that last time, my system was in some odd state.
Here are the BIOS settings for my card (I had it set them to the
defaults):
PnP = On
I/O = 220H-22FH
MPU-401 I/O = 330H - 333H
IRQ = 11
DMA 1 = CH0
WAVE 2 DMA = CH1
When I run the above alsaconf and have it bruteforce detect my card, it
produces the following /etc/modprobe.conf:

Occasionally, I get a lockup when my system goes to reboot. The drives are
all un/re-mounted and everything's shut down, but there's an error like
the above.

I searched bugzilla.kernel.org today and found a bug <

related to this bug.
I tried the comment to list devices detected by pnp in /sys. Here's what I

Well, I've fiddled with this a bit more. After fixing the dma1 and dma2
entries, I can set the IRQ to 5, 7, or 11 in /etc/modprobe.conf and the
OPL3SA2 driver is loaded.
Currently, I have the BIOS settings set to the default IRQ=11, DMA1=0,
DMA2=1 like before. I've fixed dma1= and dma2= in /etc/modprobe.conf and
if irq= is set to 5, 7, or 11, sound works (I just have to touch the PCM
mixer while playing...).
Here's my /proc/dma entry as alsaconf detects it and after I fix it so
sound sort of works. Maybe it's helpful?
Detected by alsaconf:

Fixed by me so things kinda work:

The NMX devices are probably not related. Yamaha has YMF prefix.
So, the IRQ can be selected without any problem, but the DMA configuration
must be forced to one combination otherwise it does not work?
