hello all,

i've got mobo with nforce2 and siimage3112 chipset and two sata hd. i'd like to
install suse91, which doesn't support siimage chipset, so i've to use software
raid or lvm.
what would be better/faster?
can i check speed of lvm like hd speed with hdparm?
thank for tip
philip

Well, what are you trying to do? If you want redundancy, go with RAID.
If you want volume management, go with LVM. I'd say you should do both
(RAID the disks then use LVM on top), but without more data there is no
answer for "better/faster".

You can find Sil311x support in the 2.6.6 kernel. I've run it with the
Sil3114 controller.

hi,
i'm sorry that i wasn't more clear. i used to have raid0 with the siimage binary
driver, but that is only for 2.4 kernels. so i've to use software raid and i
didn't find the way how to put lvm on top of software raid. or how can i do it?
however, in suse admin guide is written about lvm: 'several hard disks can be
used with improved performance in the raid0 (striping) mode.' any idea? can i
use lvm as raid0? course, the best is raid and lvm on top, but if i can use only
lvm, how fast it would be? can i check the speed?
thank you
philip

so far i know (i didn't watch that for few last months) there is driver for
sil3112 in 2.6 kernel (sata_sil) but the raid driver didn't work. also it didn't
work well for everyone. so any good news?
thank you

Jeff Garzik said on the 10th May in the linux-ide list:

Serial ATA (SATA) for Linux
status report
May 10, 2004

Silicon Image 3112/3114
-----------------------
Summary: No TCQ. Looks like a PATA controller, but with full SATA
control including hotplug and PM.

libata driver status: Beta.

drivers/ide driver status: Production, but see issue #4.

Issue #4: Need to have the most recent fixes posted to lkml, for stable
operation and full performance (where possible).

You can do software RAID on your drives, which gives you a device like
/dev/md0. To put LVM on top of software RAID you create a phyiscal
volume in /dev/md0 (or several PVs in /dev/md<n>), create a volume
group from these PVs, etc.

You can do software RAID0 and LVM on top of it as described above.
However, LVM can also do striping over PVs of one VG, so for striping
you don't need software RAID, but can do LVM directly on your drives.
