Hi, and happy new year everyone,
The end of the year is a moment to take a step back and take a bigger
look at the situation. I have done that for buildroot, and as I see it
the two biggest problems we have are:
- Lack of an active maintainer. No hard feelings, but lets face it -
Erik hasn't really been active in buildroot development for quite
some time. This isn't a big deal for day to day development, but it
means that there's no one doing stuff like keeping the website
up to date, a central contact point for infrastruture issues (like
the recent break in), make decissions when there is disagreements
among developers (we already lost Bernhard because of that), and:
- Lack of releases. It has often been discussed, but nothing has come
of it.
I offer to do something about both: Take over maintainership and get
atual stable releases out the door (if Erik and the other developers
agree).
What is the plan? Getting the first release out is always the hardest,
so I would on purpose aim low for the first release and get it out
soon (February). The target is to get all architectures to build (and
run where hw is available for test) using the default toolchain config
and busybox, anything else is just a bonus. I will put out the first
release candidate early next week, so from then on please don't add
anything else than bugfixes until the release it out. I believe in
time based releases, so any architectures that we cannot fix in time
will simply be disabled in kconfig (E.G. depend on BROKEN).
After that I would like us to move to a regular release schedule every
3 months with 2 months of development and 1 month of stabilization.
The big issue with buildroot quality control is the mindblowing number
of configuration combinations and specialized hardware needed to
test. I am therefore convinced we need to leverage qemu and
agressively deprecate legacy versions / packages + actively work with
upstream to keep the number of patches low. I think our users would
also be happier with a less ambitious project that wouldn't break left
and right, instead of the current situation.

What is the "default toolchain config?". I can see that this would affect the AVR32 where the patches are still to be introduced into gcc and binutils. (They are there in uClibc right now). You have complained about size of patches, and that is why there is a prepatched toolchain for AVR32. If that is not considered to be OK, then the several MBytes of patches has to be introduced into the trunk. If you by default toolchain config, means that each architecture has its own toolchain versions, but the parameters like enabling WCHAR etc are standardized, then this is fine with me. As I pointed out before, it is a source of problems that the toolchain and the rootfs is build in a single make. I think they should be separated. I believe a distribution needs use a single version of each package and we should focusing to get that to work for as many architectures as possible. The implementation needs to be discussed. Instead of having a common "BROKEN" dependency, I think it would be good if each package depend on an <package>_ENABLE. This means that you can for a specific distribution enable packages by architecture. config BR2_PACKAGES_arm bool depends on BR2_arm depends on BR2_VERSION_1_0 default y ?select BUSYBOX_ENABLE ?select <package-1>_ENABLE if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM ?select <package-2>_ENABLE? if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM ... ?select <package-1>_ENABLE? if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM You would also want to enable everything, if you do not have a distribution. ?config BR2_PACKAGES_ALL depends on !?BR2_VERSION_1_0 default y select BUSYBOX_ENABLE select <package-1>_ENABLE if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM select <package-2>_ENABLE? if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM ... select <package-1>_ENABLE? if !BR2_MINIMAL_SYSTEM ?If a user chooses to not use a distribution, then Buildroot will be as free as it is now, to build whatever With this method we need to support a user file which allows users to extend the enables for testing purposes. For Linux, there are two different ways of building it. The simple and the advanced configuration. I am fine with restricting kernel choices for the simple configuration and to use that as a default. The goal of the advanced linux configuration is to give freedom of selection to the user,so this should not contain any restrictions on kernel versions/patches. For this to work ; i think we need to support having multiple makefiles for each package. There needs to be a stable makefile for the distribution but there needs to be a way to provide fixes that is available to other developers as well. If an ARCH is broken in the stable directory, then it should be possible to commit changes to a separate directory for testing by others on different architectures I showed in a previous mail, how this can be done. I use the term BSP for directories under "target/device/" target/device/Atmel is a group of Board Support Packages They define things like BOARD_NAME and BOARD_PATH which for different reasons are hardwired and not enabled through Config.in files. We should document which environment variables (if any) are mandatory, and which are optional. The same with directories,and file names. Currently you have linux config files called linux26.config and this is really no good. Assume you have linux-alpha.config and linux-beta.config, and you do not supply info on which one to use? Whatever kconfig selects as default (which is Linux 2.6.28 / uclibc 0.9.30 / binutils 2.19 / gcc 4.2.4) for everything else than avr32 and nios. I wonder, why many of the patches are also included in uClibc's Buildroot then. Don't the avr32 users use Atmel's Buildroot? I'm an avr32 user myself and only use Atmel's Buildroot for development. One drawback is that I'm not up-to-date with uClibc, because these changes are only seldom merged into the Atmel branches, only short before their release candidates. So I end up working on another file base, which doesn't ease integration of changes into uClibc's Buildroot. I could merge myself, a branch "upstream" is available and is updated often, but that doesn't make sense somehow. I haven't yet tried it, so I don't know whether it will cause some hassle or not. I haven't yet asked why this merge happens so rarely. Maybe lack of time? OK, I'm already getting avr32-buildroot specific, but I think updating the "devel" branch would be nice, even without testing anything. I think it should have worked, but I got a compile error that wasn't related to the patch as far as I remember and judge. I had some time consuming toolchain rebuilds and then I noticed that the new version wasn't really necessary, so I stopped investigating further and stayed with the current version. And even if it worked, this is not a solution. Someone should make it ready and submit it upstream and it's definetly not me, I haven't written the patch and cannot say anything about it's maturity. If nobody involved in this patch has the time to do it, it should best be thrown out of uclibc-buildroot and just be kept in HCE's repo. That probably could be said about most AVR32 user around. I guess HCE and others from Atmel will only point users to Atmel's fork because of the quality issues we have here, and lack of release. It really doesn't look good for the company to point it's customers here and it sudenly doesn't even build today. Having our quality issues and releases sorted out, it's likely that their branch might just go away. There are cases like DirectFB and perhaps other libs that it's not possible, because the lib changes it's API. But in general, having several versions of the same package will add clutter and will be a maintenance nightmare. Ulf, I see your point. But suggesting to have versions for every package is too much. The point is, when you have to be stable for delivered products, you won't update any package without a reason, let alone u-boot or the toolchain. During development you can update whenever you want to. So if you really need some new versions, you can cherry-pick them from the latest buildroot into your stable-branch. It really does not matter. The Atmel branch fills one need, and the AVR32 support in the main trunk fills another need. My idea is based on that if buildroot works, then noone should need to have a personal stable branch because buildroot will contain the personal stable branch without much addition. Unfortunately people equates having several package versions inside buildroot with having to test different permutations of those packages. That just mean that either they have not read what I have written or they have not understood so I repeat: My proposal means that the test effort will only use ONE VERSION of each package. The release will only support one version of each package. It is in the development phase, where you get more versions, and when you move to a new package version in a new distribution you FREEZE the old versions, but you do not remove them and you do not allow the casual user to select them through Kconfig. You can however select to build an older distribution and then the older versions will be used. Pushing stuff into mainstream is always desirable. I don't mean to have AVR32 specific things out of uclibc-buildroot. Of course it should be supported there as well. But mplayer is just a good example, where support for it is wrong and is a good reason for a separate AVR32 repo, especially given that it's well supported by Atmel. But when you already put so much stuff into uclibc-buildroot to fully support AVR32, what's then remaining in HCE's tree and for what reason this is not put into upstream? With your arguments, HCE doesn't need to commit to his own repository at all, he could just commit everything to upstream. When I'm on stable, I definetly want to be on stable and only update/fix packages that caused bugs. Consider a package that doesn't update its version in buildroot (and also upstream maybe) during several months. It will never FREEZE and always stay in development phase, because it's the latest version, and it will probably get more patches. So when merging the latest buildroot updates into my personal buildroot repo for a board in development, I'd get changes behind my back also for a released board in support phase. No, because noone basically got any patches committed for a long time to the U-Boot project so the AT91 team did their own thing based on U-Boot-1.1.5 and remained with U-Boot-1.1.5 for a long time. I have updated the patches to newer versions until 1.2.0 and a prepatched U-Boot was added to buildroot some time ago in target/device/Atmel/u-boot, maybe a year later someone added the generic u-boot to target. There has been some comments about having two ways of building U-Boot, so I decided to merge, but that does not mean that I want to lost the extra functionality. Everything I added to U-boot, except the sam9g20 support has been there for 18 months minimum, just in a different way. Before I added this, people could build u-boot-1.3.4. They still can build 1.3.4 without any patches. And in my point of view you do NOT commit a patch to the distribution directory, because you risk fixing a minor issue for one architecture, while potentially break the BUILD of ALL the others. This behaviour should not be legal. Instead you create a new directory, add your patch to that directory and use that directory for your build. Other people using other architectures can test your directory as well, once buildroot enters a testing phase. In package/x11r7/ there is only one little avr32 patch to support xorg-server for this architecture. I think this is fine to be included in uclibc-buildroot, as long as it is pushed upstream. I looked at Xorg's git web interface and at least in the latest version it is included. So this is not a good example for a lack-of-commit-access issue with HCE's repository. I rather thought of examples like the big mplayer patch. This doesn't belong into uclibc-buildroot, but into the AVR32 repo. And as I said earlier: without commit access just send a patch to HCE. Then HCE will detect that mplayer will not build and the patch will be have to be rebased on the new version. You will of course see a new AVR32 patch quite soon in uclibc-buildroot. That's exactly the problem. We cannot update mplayer without breaking anything. It would be interesting. But if someone finds the time to update the patch, then I don't understand why there won't be spent some more time to get it ready for inclusion upstream. I have never objected. But it depends on the type of the patch. A simple patch that adds some architecture specific configurations (endian or something) to get it working belongs to uclibc-buildroot. And even there it can require some investigation to update the patch, if the source code base has changed. And this investigation should be avoided with pushing it upstream. Same with feature patches, like the ones recently added to U-Boot. We really need to keep patches to a minimum (and push them upstream) to stay sane. Most packages only have a single version and that works fine. Almost everything under packages builds just fine on any sane architecture. Atmel Norway has come to the conclusion that since Builkroot does not have stable distributions Atmel cannot rely on the main trunk. That is a problem known to everyone, and if this is fixed, then I see no reason for Atmel to maintain its own fork. It is not fixed by a system which has stable distributions which are removed and replaced with another stable distribution which breaks support for a number of systems. It's versioned (and tagged in the VCS) so it's not that an old version just ends up in /dev/null The main issue regarding older releases is that the source packages might not be available where they used to be. I have been running with them on for a long time, since when I last tried them OFF, there were a lot of packages which did seemed to require at least WCHAR to build properly for ARM. There are nice advantages if these packages could be made to run without WHCAR of course. A typical issue that pops up from time to time is that people build the toolchain with a certain configuration and then finds that they need a different configurtion to build a package, and do not realize that they need to rebuild the toolchain for the changes to take effect. It would be good to resolve this, and this is why I have proposed to separate toolchain build. With SYSROOT in gcc-4 there is really no reason to induce people to rebuild the toolchain, and we might want to support downloading a binary toolchain as well. When the toolchain has been build it should generate Config.in files automatically, which is included by the Buildroot Config.in. You will then have access to the toolchain parameters, but you will not have the ability to add packages depending on non avaialble options. You will have to go back and reconfigure the toolchain when then will then be forced to be rebuilt. gcctools: toolchain/.config make -C toolchain touch $@ and then the toolchain is automatically rebuilt everytime the toolchain configuration is changed. I have a buildbot running at work for the platforms we're using with good results, but it's a question about coming up with varying enough configs to get good test coverage. At least for AVR32 which I usually build for, most common breaks are in those packages. They are also the trickiest ones. You need several for distributions (or releases) to work You need the "stable" makefile You need a "testing" makefile and you need a "development" makefile There is no support for indicating that a package works for one architecture and is broken for another. As I see it, you start with the minimum set of packages in the stable distribution, and then you start putting a set of packages in the testing part. People should be able to test building the combined stable + testing packages with *all* testing packages enabled. When someone finds that a certain architecture can build a set of packages, then this fact can be commited to trunk by setting the enable for each working package for that architecture. We should maybe also have separate untested/broken status for each package/architecture. Some packages relies on H/W which never is going to be present. Thinking of PCI etc, and it we may want to separate broken (whgich theoretically is fixable) from something that should *never* be tried. This will allow anyone else to build the stable + testing packages by including the file containing the enables for that architecture/distribution combination. Approaching the end of the testing period, we will find some packages permanently broke for everything. We then prune them from the testing set, Other packages will work for some architectures, and they will have the architecture specific enable removed, while the (hopefully many) packages that build OK for everything, should have a global enable set if the distribution is used. With a system where you define which versions of each package you should use, with the possibility for the user to override this, you get something which is workable You can also allow people to have several versions of the same package for different architectures. With the current structure you cannot work as a team. ----- So what happens if we jst add BR2_BROKEN. If you have one package like AVAHI, with might builds for 9 out of 10 architectures. Are we going to mark this as broken, or are we going to mark the 10th architecture as broken. No good answer here. I think our goal should be to help people to secure a working build for the things we choose to support, but to allow them to improve and fix problems without making it unneccessary hard to do so. I do not think that we want to block people from using other versions than the one supported in the distribution. They need to be able to test new things. IMO, It is also important to allow people to go back and rebuild a stable distribution years later, but still be able to upgrade the odd package. As you pointed out, we do not have the resources to do every test for every architecture. That is why we need to be able to bring up architecture support in an incremental fashion. Unless we can commit patches to a development section without breaking the distribution we cannot work as a team. Your goal of a single source package that will not break for any supported architecture will thus be met by the packages IN the distribution. Packages outside the distribution are not supported. It will also allow people to build old distributions. Anyone wanting to build a system adding package-versions to their own build of the distribution, cam do so without disrupting the build. That means that when we plan to create a new distribution, a lot of the work, may already be done. Allowing a commit, will allow other people to test on other architectures as well. When it is time to look at a new release, then it is easy to check what has been introduced since the last distribution, and create the version file for the new testing phase. People can then try to build the test distribution for different architectures, using the "enable all" file, and if it builds, then the enable is set for that architecture. If it does not build, then it is set to broken for that architecture. If the problem can be fixed with a patch, then a new directory is created with the patch. The architecture specific distribution file is set to use that directory, instead of the testing directory. You can periodically during the testing phase generate a release candidate enabling all working packages for a specific architecture. During next phase, you provide a version file allowing you to build all architecures using directories with the new patches. Hopefully the patch will not break any architectures, and then it can be accepted into next release candidate. If the patch fixes the problem in some architectures, but breaks others, then it becomes an architecture specific patch. *.patch.$ARCH) This approach gives us a possibility to work as a team to bring up the distribution and will significantly reduce the workload because you can concentrate on a few architecture and new patches will not break anything else. I do not see it as too messy to use directories. Go to the package/<package> directory and create a new directory, copy the files but not the svn info from the old distribution directory X.Y.Z. Call the new directory X1.X2.X3. Add "<package>_VERSION=Z1.Y1.Z1" to a file, and and ?select BR2_PACKAGE_<package> to another, and your are ready to go. ONce you ahve added a patch, then it will be easy for other people to test this by adding ? "<package>_VERSION=Z1.Y1.Z1" ?select BR2_PACKAGE_<package> to their private override files. For testing you provide a list of overrides. ??If a package build, then you commit select BR2_PACKAGE_<package> to the architecture enable file. Once the "enable" file for all architectures contain this select then the package can be considered to be validated, and can be released. Then again, my requirement is not that it needs to be implemented in a certain way, just that the functionality of beeing able to start with a distribution, and work on that distibrution + own changes, and commit those changes for review by others without breaking the build would be good. Anyone can then take the standard distribution and then replace this with thier own version. This is how openembedded works, you have a base distribution which defines what versions to use, but anyone can override the package version in their local.conf file. In order to avoid support nightmares, updates of packages belonging to previous packages should not be permitted, when work is starting on a new revision. Use of old packages together with the current distribution is not neccessarily a supported activity. This is a VERY important thing, because otherwise we end up in the support nightmare that you rightfully are scared of. Assume that we do 5 distribution and one poor package gets a new version every time so you have 5 version directories I do not suggest that we use KConfig to allow the user to select which of the 5 versions he/she wants to use. Again that will end up in a support nightmare since packages mightr depend on that other packages have a certain version. The user will only use Kconfig to select which *package* and not which *version*. Either the user selects a distribution and then he will be limited by which packages are tested for that distribution and might also be limited by the architecture. Or he disables the distribution system and can build anything he wants, but then this is not a supported activity. He STILL cannot select the version with Kconfig. If the move from dbus-1.1.1 would break the powerpc architecture, you would be able to have ".distribution-2.0-powerpc" which defines DBUS_VERSION=1.1.1 This file might be created at the release of distribution-2.0 but can be overridden by a new ? DBUS_VERSION=1.1.2-powerpc in local files by developers so they can continue working on the powerpc versions all the time and do not have to care about release cycles. Eventually dbus-1.1.2 is working for the powerpc and ".distribution-3.0" could contain. ?DBUS_VERSION=1.1.2 and ?".distribution-3.0-powerpc" could be empty. If the distribution does not change package versions then of course there will be no added directory. If you want to test if a certain distribution works for an architecture, you will only have one version of each package to test. If you are doing development for a new distribution you again will only have one package version to test. Even if we eventually end up with multiple versions for each and every package, the distribution mechanism will only support one version per package per distribution/architecture. I do not think that it is a good idea to check in two or more versions when we create a new distribution The distribution will allow max one added version per package but it should be OK to allow an architecture to keep an old revision of a package, if the new version breaks, but the old CAN NOT be modified, even for bug fixes. A developer avoiding or overridign the distribution mechanism can using override files use each an any apcakage in whatever version they want, including test versions, but we need to prune aggressively after a new release. We should document the last revision before pruning begins so that people can retrieve the work on a non-completed package which did not make it into the new distribution and create new testing directories preparing for the next distribution. I really think this would work and would be better than just tarballing the tree and then put it on a webpage. If we can achieve the same functionality with a SCM, then I am fine with this. I am not convinced yet though. Parts can be done with the SCM, I am sure, but can you get the flexibility? Automatically adding/creating the config enables and the distribition files would be good. I am a computer consultant and jump around to many jobs, most on Linux. I used buildroot sometime in 2004 or so, and someone else had already done the heavy lifting and had a released product. I needed to upgrade the kernel to something like 2.6.12 to get better USB support. I was completely blown away by the completeness of the buildroot concept. Everything is built including the compiler! Upgrading the BSP for the client and even adding a few apps/packages was great. Recently I was talking with another potential client about doing a new product. I thought of trying buildroot again. I first tried to build a system based on some old motorola 823 hardware I had around. I couldn't even get the compiler to build without obscure missing files etc. So then I thought probably no one was using that processor so I decided to try what I thought was a well supported hardware, one of the Atmel at91.. arm systems. I could then build the toolchain, but the busybox/packages in the standard config would not build, so I gave up. When starting a new embedded system it is very nice to be able to get a minimal system up and running and then add packages and features. Just getting Linux, Busybox and a file system working is an incredible hurdle. Having a release that is known to build and run is incredibly valuable. There are so many build environment gotcha's (ubuntu dash vs bash was one I remember), that knowing something should work really helps in finding the issues and fixing them. Better docs would help.
