Hi,
I am new to this list so apologies in advance for asking a question that
may have been answered before.
I am trying to setup a Jaunty box as an AP with a card in master mode. I
downloaded kernel 2.6.31, enabled mac80211 then rebuilt and installed
the new kernel. I have tried two different PCI cards, one based in the
Realteck chipset RTL-8185 and the other based on the Atheros AR5007G.
The problem is that I cannot set either card to Master mode. I have am
using compat-wireless-2.6.31-rc7 and kernel 2.6.31-2.6.31. Any help,
suggestions or valium would be most welcome right now.

Hi Neil,
Interesting, if completely unnecessary flaming. Hard to know how best to
respond. First of all, you are clearly right, I posted to the wrong
list. I will repost to the appropriate list. Surprised you are happy to
respond when you clearly are not even aware of the more popular Linux
distributions. The rest of your comments are quite juvenile.

Hi John,
I'm no expert, but since you didn't get any replies (except for that troll), I'll add my two cents.
You didn't mention how you are trying to set the cards to master mode, I assume you are using iwconfig, if so, try with hostapd. Apparently hostapd and iwconfig use different kernel methods for this. (I'm not completely sure about this, corrections are accepted).
You might also want to check the module options for whatever module you are using with your wireless cards, some modules set the master mode based on parameters. Just run: modinfo <module_name> and see if there is anything relevant.
I don't know what is jaunty or compat-wireless-xxx, there are so many distros, releases, and package names that you can't expect everyone to know that (except when discussing in the distro's mailing list).
Best regards,
Frito

Hi John,
First of all Neil was wrong when he said that this list for for 9k
chipsets only. That's not true.
If you go to
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k#supported_chipsets
you can see that ath9k supports also some 5k chipsets.
Second you can check http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers
and note that both ath5k ath9k support master or AP mode.
I don't know which ones you are using.
I compiled and installed compat-wireless and I'm currently using ath9k
and I have had no problem. I'm guessing that you probably tried to
change operation modes using iwconfig. If you did so it does not work.
To run ath9k in ap mode I use hostapd and specify driver=nl80211 in the
hostapd.conf.
Try using hostapd. If you are still having problems please post a mail
with more comments.
I've always found good help here on the mailing list. The developers of
ath9k have been doing an amazing job and the reply that you received
from Neil doesn't reflect the behaviour of this mailing list.
Best Regards

Hi Frito, Rodolphe and Will,
Many thanks indeed for your help, it was a great help to me. As soon as
I have it up and running fully I will post the details and then distill
it into a howto for the Ubuntu list also.
Thanks again. It's a great list with great contributors.

Thanks again for the pointers. I have just got it to work with hostapd,
as you said. There was a little bit to it, so I will write it up and
post.
